Hummelbird finally leaves the nest
For anyone who has visited NatFly at Narromine over the last couple of years or perhaps the Avalon Airshow and had the opportunity to have a look at Dave King's Hummelbird in the process of construction ...... you will be happy to know that it finally took to the air for it's maiden flight at Holbrook Airpark on Saturday 5th November 2005.
What started out as the Watson Windwagon way back in the mid 1970s and later modified by Morry Hummel in the USA to become the Hummelbird, the construction of this aircraft has been a labour of love for Dave since August 2000. Dave spent in excess of 1600 hours building the Hummel, which will be only the second of its type flying in Australia and the second of its type in the world to be powered by a Rotax engine ...... the first, in both cases, being build by Bryan Gabriel at Holbrook in 1987. The standard Hummel power plant is the half VW engine.
As you would expect, there was quite a gathering of HULC members on hand to witness the first flight ...... and of course to participate in the post-flight photo.

Dave's version of the Hummelbird is powered by a Rotax 503, which performed flawlessly during the test flight. Dave's initial impression of the handling of the Hummel ....... it handles like a pussycat, it even flies hands off. Dave's biggest challenge now will be accumulating enough air miles to match the road miles the Hummel logged whilst being trailered to the various airshows during it's construction.

Recreational Aviation Australia's national ultralight fly-in "Natfly" is on again over the Easter holiday weekend (10 to 13 April 2009). As in previous years, Natfly 2009 will be held at Narromine Aerodrome in the central west of New South Wales.
Once again, in keeping with tradition, there will be a contingent of HULC members making the annual pilgrimage to Narromine and setting up the customary campsite on the airfield for the weekend. If you are intending to visit Natfly 2009, stop by the HULC campsite and say G'day.
